Ushers Heritage Open Day on Sat 7th September
supported by Newland Homes
Built in around 1720 for the wealthy cloth merchant Robert Houlton, Parade House is one of the finest and most elegant buildings in Trowbridge, the centrepiece of what Pevsner's Guide to Wiltshire described as a 'stretch of palaces' along Fore Street. This prestigious building features beautifully furnished reception rooms, a sweeping original 18th Century staircase leading to a grand first floor ballroom with seven full height sash windows spanning the width of the building.
Of particular note is the fully panelled Director's Room with ornate ceiling and marble fireplace, the delicate Bridgerton style Blue Drawing Room and the intricate plaster ceiling coving over the first floor landing featuring a garland of flowers and fruit. The original vaults have been converted into a stylish bar and small cinema.
Ushers 200th Anniversary
This year marks a special occasion in the history of Parade House. From 1918 until 1998, Parade House was the head office of Ushers Brewery, first founded in 1824. In its heyday in the 20th century it was one of the biggest brewers in the South West and a much-loved pillar of Trowbridge community.
This Heritage Day, Parade House will be commemorating Ushers' 200th Anniversary with a major celebration that will include photographs and memorabilia, including a vintage Ushers lorry, special displays, live music and a beer tent in the forecourt operated by local craft brewer Kettlesmith. Afternoon tea, drinks and refreshments will also be served inside the house.
Entry to Parade House will be free to the public from 11am until 4pm.
With the kind support of Barlow Financial Management
At 5pm we will be holding a special Ushers Reunion Party for past employees of the brewery. Because of limits on the number of people we can accommodate in Parade House, admission to the reunion is restricted to former employees. Come and renew contact with former Ushers colleagues, share memories and stories from your experiences, hear special talks from key managers and staff from Ushers, and enjoy drinks and canapés.
