Uphill Game is an acoustic contemporary jazz quartet based in Bristol, UK. They play open, dynamic, driving, delicate, exploratory, groove- and melody-focused music, inspired by the likes of the William Parker Quartet but with its own distinctive collective voice. Currently one of the UK’s best-kept jazz secrets, the band has recently released its first album “Paddles” recorded live in the sumptuous acoustic of St George’s Bristol.
The band is led by double-bassist & composer Riaan Vosloo. Riaan has played with Nostalgia 77, Tongue Fu, Gregory Porter, Jamie Cullum, and many more. Drummer Matt Stockham Brown leads his own project 6161, won a Montreux Jazz Festival talent award in 2019 and has played with the likes of Massive Attack, Rodriguez (Searching For Sugarman), and Cosmo Sheldrake. Tenor saxophonist Jake McMurchie and flugelhornist Pete Judge are the horn section of BBC Jazz Award winners Get The Blessing, and established composers and band-leaders in their own right.
For all of the reasons above Uphill Game are regulars at JABMC, being an absolutely cracking contemporary jazz quartet, very popular with our club goers.
Their newly released debut album ”Paddles” will be on sale during the gig.
Reviews of Paddles:
“An absolutely compelling album... progressive and spiritually uplifting.. a truly superior product... this is the best new acoustic jazz I've heard this year, bar none.”
