Truchard Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery located in the Carneros region of Napa Valley. For nearly 50 years, proprietors Tony and Jo Ann Truchard have cultivated exceptional grapes and built a successful vineyard. Through their dedication and hard work, they helped pioneer grape growing in Carneros. In 1989, the Truchards established their winery, producing wines exclusively from their estate-grown fruit.

A little History.

In 1972, Tony and Jo Ann Truchard, with their growing family, moved to California, where Tony purchased land in Carneros, a region initially considered unsuitable for vineyards due to its cool climate and salty groundwater. With innovation and determination, Tony pioneered the use of drip irrigation and grew exceptional quality grapes. By 1989, after years of supplying grapes to premier wineries, the Truchards began producing their own wines, which quickly gained acclaim. Today, now being overseen by  Tony's Son Anthony, Truchard Vineyards encompasses 400 acres, with 280 acres planted, and continues to produce estate-grown wines, preserving the family’s commitment to sustainable farming and ensuring the legacy of quality winemaking for future generations.

The Land

The vines at Truchard Vineyards thrive not only because of the cooling fog and moderate temperatures of Carneros, but also due to the estate’s distinctive topography, which includes rolling hills, steep ravines, and numerous valleys. The vines are planted across a diverse range of soil types such as clay, shale, sandstone, lava rock, and volcanic ash, creating an environment that supports the growth of a variety of grape species, each selected for its ideal growing conditions with minimal intervention. Covering nearly 400 contiguous acres, the property extends about two miles in length and a half mile in width. Positioned at the northeastern edge of the Carneros region, Truchard Vineyards sits on the foothills of the Mayacama mountain range and Mount Veeder, benefiting from additional warmth and alluvial soils that improve drainage and protect the roots from excess moisture. The estate's south and west-facing slopes capture the afternoon sun, making it ideal for grape varieties like Syrah, Roussanne, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Pinot Noir, which prefers cooler climates, is planted on the eastern-facing slopes, ensuring it receives morning sun while being shielded from the afternoon heat.

Over time, the Truchards have learned that Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot excel in the clay soils, while Syrah, Zinfandel, and Roussanne thrive in the volcanic soils. The vineyard is divided into small blocks, each carefully planned to optimise the specific characteristics of the land, creating a mosaic of varieties, clones, and rootstocks. With 12 different grape varieties planted across the estate, Truchard Vineyards is one of the most diverse in Napa Valley, producing wines that truly reflect a unique sense of place.
