Description

Calling all film lovers! The Polish Heritage Association of Maryland is hosting a panel presentation and interactive discussion of the controversial 2023 film The Peasants, 1-4 pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at the Towson Unitarian Universalist Church. Called “a towering achievement of animation” by one critic and “a disappointingly conventional animation” by another, this film prompts strong opinions in viewers. We invite you to add your voice at what promises to be a lively event.

The Peasants retells the story of Wladyslaw Reymont’s novel of the same name, for which he won a Nobel Prize in 1924. It tells the tale of “a young woman determined to forge her path within the confines of a late 19th-century Polish village.” This R-rated film was produced by the same Polish team that created the stunning 2017 Oscar-nominated animation Loving Vincent. To see The Peasants before the discussion, visit Netflix, Amazon Prime, or another streaming service.

This event will be presented in person and virtually via Zoom. First, our online expert panel will present context about the film and the novel. Then, participants may ask questions before the discussion. Questions may be submitted at the event or in advance by email to RecordingSecretaryPHAM@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you!
