In a career littered with standout movies, The Big Lebowski is Joel & Ethan Coen's cult comic masterpiece. It's a free-wheeling, weed-infused modern-day homage to Raymond Chandler's detective noir classic The Big Sleep, while also somehow managing to be an entirely bizarre love letter to the pleasures of ten-pin bowling. Who could have imagined such a weird and wonderful beast? Jeff Bridges was never better (and that's a feat in itself) as stoner dropout and bowling aficionado Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. He gets roughed up by a couple of thugs who have mistaken him for his namesake, a millionaire with a much younger wayward wife who owes money to a Los Angeles porn kingpin. In the process they pee on The Dude's prized Persian rug. When he goes looking for compensation from the real "Big Lebowski", he finds himself embroiled in a complicated kidnapping plot where almost nothing is what it seems. In fact, the story itself isn't really important: for the Coen brothers it's just the hook upon which to hang a constellation of unforgettable one-of-a-kind oddballs inhabited by a roll-call of 1990s Hollywood's finest characters actors. There is truly no other movie quite like The Big Lebowski. And let me tell you in case you were wondering: it's true, that rug really did tie the room together...
