Description

Learn the basics of historic wood window preservation techniques in a one-day, hands-on
workshop led by local craftsperson Vance McDermott of Tried & True Historic Windows.
Participants will learn how the mechanics of a double-hung window function, how to remove
and reinstall sash, glazing, and how to make historic windows more energy efficient.


This workshop does not require any prior knowledge and is open to homeowners, tradespeople,
and anyone that wants to learn more about preserving historic windows.


Learning Objectives
Participants will learn through a combination of instructor demonstrations and hands-on
experience. The focus is on real-world conditions and practical techniques. Participants will
become familiar with:


1. Double-hung window components and mechanics
2. Sash removal and reinstallation
3. Historic window efficiency and weatherstripping
4. Deglazing and reglazing techniques, including cutting glass


What To Expect

The workshop is hands-on and interactive, so expect to stay busy. Be prepared to:


1. Stand, sit, and crouch
2. Follow all safety precautions, proper use of personal protective equipment including a
respirator mask
3. Collaborate with others in activities
4. Be outdoors (sunscreen and hats are recommended)
5. Get dirty from hands-on activities


What To Bring
1. Wear clothes that are okay to get dirty, stained, or torn
2. Long pants required, long-sleeve shirt recommended
3. Closed toe shoes required
4. Respirator or other personally preferred PPE, work gloves (PPE will be provided for
those that don’t bring their own)
5. Sunscreen or other sunblock
6. Hat
7. Water bottle
8. Snacks and lunch, there are food options nearby for purchase

Schedule
9:00AM Check in, welcome, and introductions. Safety overview. Brief history of historic
windows.
9:30AM Double-hung window overview, terminology, mechanics, how they function. Sash
removal demonstration. Hands-on practice of upper and lower sash removal.
10:30AM Sash installation, re-roping techniques. Hands-on practice of re-roping sash and
installation.
12:30PM Lunch (eat on site if you brought your own or purchase lunch nearby)
1:00PM Historic window energy efficiency overview. Demonstration of weatherstripping
install.
2:00PM Sash deglazing, paint stripping, and reglazing demonstrations. Glass cutting basics and
demonstration. Hands-on practice.
3:30PM Clean up, recap, final Q&A
4:00PM Wrap up workshop

Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled start time in order to check in. You do not need to bring proof of ticket purchase, check-in will be by name and number of tickets. Street parking is available, please be mindful of not blocking neighbors' driveways. 

Cancellation & Ticket Transfer: All ticket purchases, registrations, and contributions are non-refundable. Tickets are transferable to another guest for this event. If you are unable to attend please email [email protected] as soon as possible in case there is a waitlist. 

By purchasing a ticket each participant agrees to the terms and conditions of Tried & True Historic Window's Workshop Liability Waiver. Each participant will be required to sign the liability waiver in order to participate in the workshop. Participants will be emailed a digital signature link after ticket purchase. Any ticket holders that do not complete the digital signature ahead of time will sign the waiver upon check-in to the workshop. 

Workshop Liability Waiver

In consideration of being allowed to participate in any way in the window workshop
programs, related events and activities lead by Tried & True Historic Windows, I
acknowledge, appreciate, and agree that:
1. The risk of injury from many of the activities is significant, including the potential for
permanent paralysis and death, and while particular skills, rules, equipment, and
personal discipline may reduce this risk, the risk of serious injury does exist; and,
I KNOWINGLY AND FREELY ASSUME ALL SUCH RISKS, BOTH KNOWN AND UNKNOWN, EVEN
IF ARISING FROM THE NEGLIGENCE OF TRIED & TRUE HISTORIC WINDOWS or others and
assume full responsibility for my participation; and,
2. I willingly agree to comply with the stated and customary terms and conditions for
participation. If, however, I observe any unusual significant hazard during my presence or
participation, I will remove myself from participation and bring such to the attention of
the nearest employee of Tried & True Historic Windows and/or volunteer immediately;
and,
3. I, for myself and on behalf of my heirs, assigns, personal representatives and next of
kin, HEREBY RELEASE AND HOLD HARMLESS TRIED & TRUE HISTORIC WINDOWS, it's
officers, officials, directors, coordinators, agents, and/or employees, other participants,
sponsoring agencies, sponsors and advertisers (“RELEASEES”), WITH RESPECT TO ANY
AND ALL INJURY, DISABILITY, DEATH, OR LOSS OR DAMAGE TO PERSON OR PROPERTY,
WHETHER ARISING FROM THE NEGLIGENCE OF TRIED & TRUE HISTORIC WINDOWS OR
OTHERWISE, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
