Description

Learn to dance Bachata and meet other queer folks! At 8pm, we'll kick off with a beginner Bachata lesson. After, stay for our social/practice try out your new moves and get to know other folks. We will be wrapping up at 10pm for you to enjoy the rest of your evening!

For non-queer folks: While allies are welcome, our event aims to provide a safe space for queer folks to learn and enjoy Afro-Latin dance. Our last event was sold out and many queer folks did not get a chance to attend. If you aren't attending with a queer attendee, we highly encourage you to volunteer with us instead! Message us on Instagram if you're interested: @queer_afrolatin_vancouver

Our beginner lesson will be taught by Zamyla (she/her). Zamyla is passionate about removing gender norms and other harmful mindsets from the dance floor. Before moving to Vancouver, she taught at dance studios and clubs in Boston and Toronto. Her favourite things to teach are body movement, lead-follow technique, and musicality. As a dance student and performer, Zamyla has had the privilege of training with internationally renowned dancers in both salsa and bachata. Her favourite thing on the dance floor is to connect with her dance partner.

FAQ

Do I need to bring a partner?

Nope, just your beautiful self! Our classes work on a rotational basis so you'll get to meet other folks and practice your moves. Feel free to come on your own or with your queer friends + chosen family!

Can I come if I've never danced Bachata before?

Absolutely - We'll be kicking off with a beginner's lesson to help you dip your toes into Bachata! If you already have some experience, we welcome you to try out the other follow/lead role in the lesson or to support our beginners!

What should I bring/wear?

Bring a water bottle - we have a tap with cold-filtered water on-site. Come in comfortable clothing + shoes that don't grip the floor too much. (Bachata involves raising your arms and turning.) Lastly, personal hygiene goes a long way, so some deodorant and gum/mint will make us a little more comfortable around each other!

What about the Salsa part?

While the beginner lesson is Bachata, we'll play a few salsa songs during the social for those who want to try it out! Our other events feature a beginner Salsa lesson as well as other dance styles.

My partner and I had so much fun! First time trying bachata and it was lovely. The instructor was really clear and made things easy to pick up and it was great to meet new people. Would definitely go again.
