Learn to dance Salsa and meet other queer folks and allies in a queer-centric salsa and bachata event! At 7:30, we'll kick off with a complete beginner's lesson. After, stay for our social/practice try out your new moves and get to know other folks. We will be wrapping up at 9:30 for you to enjoy the rest of your evening!
Our beginner lesson will be taught by Hanna (she/her). Hanna has an extensive dance background in multiple genres and discovered Afro-Latin dance through SFU's Latin Dance Passion (LDP) club. She has since taught taught salsa and bachata at LDP, and currently trains on Baza's "Con Dulzura" Ladies Styling team.
Tickets for allies are limited and are intended for queer folks to bring a friend for company. To ensure a queer-centric event, ally tickets will be released gradually. If you are an ally looking to check out this event, we encourage you to volunteer with us, especially if ally tickets are sold out! Do I need to bring a partner?
Nope, just your friendly self ready to meet some amazing queer folks! Our classes work on a rotational basis so you'll get to meet other folks and practice your moves.
Feel free to come on your own or with your queer friends +chosen family. See our ally ticket option to bring your ally friend. If these run out, keep an eye out for more to be released later.
Can I come if I've never danced Salsa before?
Absolutely - We'll be kicking off with a beginner's lesson to help you dip your toes into Salsa dancing! If you already have some experience, we welcome you to try out the other follow/lead role in the lesson or to support our beginners!
What should I bring/wear?
Bring a water bottle - we have a tap with cold-filtered water on-site. Come in comfortable clothing + shoes that don't grip the floor too much. (Salsa involves raising your arms and turning.) Lastly, personal hygiene goes a long way, so some deodorant and gum/mint will make us a little more comfortable around each other!
What about the Bachata part?
While the beginner lesson is Salsa, we'll play a few bachata songs (at a low ratio compared to salsa) during the social for those who want to try it out! Our future events will feature a beginner bachata lesson for you to look forward to!
It was such a fun evening! The event was very well organized. The instructors were knowledgeable, engaging and efficient. Everyone was so lovely and friendly. I enjoyed dancing with strangers who were so warm and welcoming. Congrats on a successful event!
Great experience. Amazing organization and the teacher was one of the best I’ve ever head.
