Queen Alice is a 2-act psychedelic musical written by Cassian Grove and Lexie Lindquist, with music by Rory John and Francisco “Frankie” Vargas, adapting Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass into a queer coming-of-age allegory. A trans Alice travels through the looking glass, meeting figures from across the spectrum of queer performance art and history on her journey to self acceptance. There will be an evening performance at 7:00pm on Saturday, August 24th, and a matinee at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 25th.
The show is staged in a standard black box theatre, with partial cabaret seating in the front row. There will be an intermission, bathrooms will be available. Mask and proof of full vaccination or negative Covid test from within the last 24 hours to be required indoors. Performers will be unmasked, but are fully vaccinated.
I am giving the show a 4/5. The performers had good performances, energy, focus, and stayed in character. The story had some high points that touched us emotionally. The main character and the red queen were my favorites. The only reason the show is not getting a 5 star is because the sound was spotty, it was hard to hear and understand at times. Looking forward to another play.
We really enjoyed this production and the message it sent. It had a different vibe than The Odyssey from last year (which we also enjoyed). I've brought my 10 year old grandchild to both and they look forward to making this a tradition at the end of summer.
One thing that I would like to mention for improvement is in regard to the volume of the music when actors are singing. We couldn't hear the singing as they were drowned out by the music.
I appreciate what Starhouse Theater offers to our community and happy to help support it. Look forward to the next production.
The writing was so creative, current and poignant! Actors were so committed and added amazing depth to each scene. Loved it.
Wonderful time, I love the fiery passionate energy, the music and singing, and their rendition of Alice! I look forward to seeing more from Starhouse ATC. It was such a delightful time and the cast had me drawn into the show the entire time, my favorite scene that made me tear up was Alice in the forest, I won't say more of course, but it was such a sweet and tender scene.
