Description

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) Cert 15
Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Will Sampson, Brad Dourif, Christopher Lloyd. Directed by Milos Forman. (2h 14m)

This above all is the role that established Jack Nicholson as a cinematic giant. It earned him his first and most deserved Oscar for a barnstorming performance that, despite its excesses, never overshadows the large and uniformly excellent supporting cast. It's a movie of often numbing power, shot through with raw humour that never quite eclipses the nagging undercurrent of institutional despair. When incorrigible troublemaker Randle P McMurphy gets transferred from a prison farm to a mental hospital, he assumes he's in for an easy ride. But ward sister Nurse Ratched - the truly superb Louise Fletcher - runs her psychiatric unit with an iron fist, leading to an increasingly brutal battle of wills in which all the patients become involved. Perhaps the film's most intriguing aspect, almost 50 years after it was made, is that Nurse Ratched now seems less like the pure villain that she was originally intended to be, more as a single-minded professional woman who refuses to be bullied by a bunch of men. Louise Fletcher also won an Oscar for her icy and reserved performance, as did producer Michael Douglas, director Milos Forman and the screenwriters, making it in 1976 the first film for more than 40 years to sweep the Big Five categories of best picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay. Certified brilliance!
