My partner loves Poe's poetry, so this was my gift to him. I was a little on the apprehensive side; thought it would be too weird or boring. But I was very wrong!

The setting is perfect. If you've never been to the Abbey, it's an old church converted to a restaurant/Axe throwing venue. So, even if the only Poe poem you know is the Raven, this is the place to hear it read aloud.

We got there in time to have a drink and enjoy the free Charcuteries, but the kitchen had closed, so we weren't able to get dinner. Next time, we'll arrive a good hour before showtime to get something more substantial to eat.

The event itself started with a brief explanation of Poe's life. Then the sommelier explained his first pick for the wine pairing. We were about to hear the poem "Alone." For this, he picked a wine that can only grow on a specific peak on a specific mountain where no other grapes can grow. It is very much alone. It was also delicious. After passing out the wine, the poem was read. The reader was, well, the bartender at the abbey. BUT, he clearly had read the poem before and understood it. And, if he wants a career reading smut novels, he's got the deep resonating voice that could make him millionaire.

I won't go on to explain the rest of the pairings, but they were all well thought out. There were four pairings for five poems. It was truly an exceptional evening. As for whether or not it was weird, well, it's Poe. That said, there was about a 50/50 split of people "Dressed Up" for the evening and those of us in street clothes. But by the end of the night, we were all chatting and discussing Poe. It was a lot of fun! It was only about 90min of readings, but I honestly could have stayed for a little more. Well worth the investment if you're looking for something different to do.

It was a fabulous event, very interesting evening with history and readings from Poe. The wine was also delicious and fun to hear the history of the vineyards they came from! Keep up the good work, we really enjoyed it and everything you put into it!

It was a grand evening…down to the smallest of details. Sue and Josef never disappoint!
The Edgar Allen Poe readings? I found myself listening to them differently. Instead of listening to a story being told, I found myself inside the mind of a madman….an anxious and tormented soul.
