Off the Wall Films for Bath Fringe Festival presents
Simon DaVison, UK, 2023, 90m, PG
NB - Doors at 5:30pm for a 6:30pm start.
Partly filmed in Bath, this splendid adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s famous nonsense poem is a bejewelled, detailed and highly-considered visual rendering. Led by the Bellman, an unlikely motley crew sets sail in search of the elusive Snark and discovers a mysterious island. They hopefully explore the terrain but find a surreal wonderland of hidden dangers governed by the twisted logic of riddles and nonsense. An absolute treat for all Carroll fans, the film will look stunning in OtWF’s rare big screen presentation. PLUS: introductory talk, in which director Simon DaVison explores the context for the writing of the poem within the revolutionary scientific thinking and discoveries of the mid 19th century, followed by a Q+A chaired by Mark Bishop of the Natural Theatre Company, who has a part in the film.
‘…without question, the finest and most imaginative interpretation of a Carroll work since Jonathan Miller’s Alice in Wonderland – Brian Sibley, President of the Lewis Carroll Society.
