This stunning 4K restoration of Notorious is screened to mark the centenary of the community cinema movement, initiated in 1925 when The Film Society (established by GB Shaw, HG Wells and Augustus John - amongst others) brought Soviet and German films to London.

One of the highlights of Hitchcock’s early American period, Notorious blends consummate espionage thrills with the most sensual romantic twinning of any of his films. It brilliantly weaves exterior suspense – the exposure of a group of Nazi conspirators who have reconvened post-war in Rio de Janeiro – with interior suspense – will the tentative “very strange love affair” between convicted Nazi spy’s daughter Alicia (Ingrid Bergman) and undercover FBI agent Dev (Cary Grant) be realised against the odds?

1946 saw both the release of Notorious and the founding of the British Federation of Film Societies, still operating today as Cinema for All which continues to foster the spirit and activities of UK-wide community cinemas such as Off the Wall Films. Funded by Cinema for All’s ‘Festival of Community Cinema’ celebrating 100 years of the film society movement, supported by the BFI awarding funds from the National Lottery.

"It's completely hypnotic: from the twisting strands of a plot defying us fully to trust anyone, to those Hitchcock specials, the shots and scenes where the camera too is a lethal conspiracist" - The Financial Times.

"Notorious has fascinating echoes of other Hitchcock movies such as Rebecca and Psycho. A must-see or must-see-again" - The Guardian.

"A brilliant motion picture that resonates on any number of levels"- Film Frenzy.

"Hitchcock's classic 1946 thriller Notorious is a terrific romantic tango between Ingrid Bergman's exotic and spicy socialite and Cary Grant's prim and proper American spy" - The Times.

"It's the accuracy, efficiency and control of Hitchcock's direction that most impress. They enable him to dovetail the film's thriller format and romantic story to dizzying, expressive and unique effect" - Time Out.

"Gorgeously shot in luminous monochrome, it's all wrapped up with an extremely suspenseful last reel" - Empire Magazine.

"This brilliant Hitchcock offering combines romance, suspense, and international intrigue with unforgettable performances from Grant and Bergman" - TV Guide.

"...still hard to beat for pure, polished entertainment" - Radio Times.
