Off the Wall Films presents
CRÍA CUERVOS (Raise Ravens)

Carlos Saura, Spain, 1976, 105m, 12A, English sub-titles

NB - Doors at 5:30pm for a 6:30pm start.

Three orphaned young girls, amongst them the wildly imaginative and quietly determined Ana (played with astonishing poise and intensity by 9-yr-old Ana Torrent), endure a cloistered summer in a cavernous ghost-filled Madrid mansion under the watchful eyes of a hated aunt and a kindly maid. Believing she has murdered her father (something she set out to do), whom she holds responsible for the death of her beloved mother (Geraldine Chaplin), Ana re-fashions her memories and the cruel, inexplicable behaviour of the adult world into a fantasised reality of her own.

Carlos Saura’s spellbinding film, winner of the Cannes Grand Jury prize and released two months after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, is a poignant family drama as well as a powerful allegory on the fall of a regime which had held power in Spain since the end, in 1939, of the civil war. The title refers to an old Spanish saying - ‘raise ravens, and they'll pluck your eyes out!’

"The film is a masterpiece of form and technique, and Chaplin and Torrent are both outstanding." - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.

"It's unsettling, moving and funny in turn, and a clear criticism of a regime that stifled the Spanish for decades." – Derek Malcolm, London Evening Standard.

"Still as moving and compelling as when it was made, Cría Cuervos seems now not diminished but enhanced by its growing distance in time " – The Criterion Collection.

"A seamless story about memory and fantasy blurring together, Cría Cuervos is unquestionably Carlos Saura’s greatest film. " – Dan Callahan, Slant.

"…an exquisitely made and deeply affecting film... Saura moves us with a gentle, poetic ease through the film’s many complex realities. " – Dave Calhoun, Time Out.
