Off the Wall Films for Bath Fringe Festival presents
DA Pennebaker, USA, 1967, 96m, 15
NB - Doors at 5:30pm for a 6:30pm start.
Did you see ‘A Complete Unknown’? Well, here’s the sequel, filmed 50 years ago! Don’t Look Back documents Dylan’s 1965 tour of the UK, replete with backstage footage, stunning on-stage performances, the infamous drubbing of Time Magazine’s hapless London reporter and the blazing row over a discarded wine glass, plus what is regarded as the first-ever music video, for Subterranean Homesick Blues. The film is a pioneer, and some say the best-ever, ‘rockumentary’, and gives penetrating insight into life on the road with Dylan at a pivotal point in his career just before he started playing with an amplified band – the ’65 UK tour was his last as a solo acoustic ‘folk-singer’. Joan Baez, Donovan, Alan Price and Allen Ginsburg pop up amongst uncredited appearances by other celebrities, all part of the tumultuous hive of Dylan’s entourage. As he later sang, “all those people we used to know, they’re an illusion to me now”. PLUS: extra surprise Dylan footage not to be missed!
‘As an exercise in the unbelievably cool, DA Pennebaker's documentary on Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of England is unparalleled’ – Kate Muir, The Times.
‘Wonderfully revealing and mythologistic’ – William Thomas, Empire Magazine.
‘It’s hard to say which is more riveting: scenes of Bob Dylan performing such classics as Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, or scenes in which Dylan unleashes his acid tongue on hapless reporters who just want a few good quotes’ – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out.
‘Both a great concert movie and an amazing documentary of mid-'60s cutting edge pop culture’ – Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune.
‘Easily one of the best documentaries on any subject ever made. It is also one of the most cinematically influential’ – Craig Marine, San Francisco Examiner.
‘An unforgettable all-access pass behind the scenes of Bob Dylan's '65 British tour, D.A. Pennebaker's landmark 1967 rock doc all but invented the form while presaging the music video’ – Jim Ridley, Village Voice.
‘Essential raw Dylan’ – Cole Smithey, ColeSmithey.com
