Having fled Algeria as a child following the state murder of her parents, Antigone lives with her three siblings and grandmother Ménécée as a refugee in Montreal. A high achiever with an acute sensitivity to injustice, her future in Canada seems assured until a devastating tragedy again engulfs her family. Terrified that younger brother Polynices will be deported, she hatches an audacious but doomed plan to spring him from police custody. Brought before the court, her case becomes a cause célèbre, and a vexatious confrontation between personal conviction and the law of the state.

Director Sophie Deraspe is a leading talent in contemporary Canadian cinema. Her fourth feature, a modern take on the Sophoclean classic and winner of 30 international awards, is an unflinching portrayal of the immigrant experience framed within a questioning examination of individual ethics, societal demands and the power of modern media. Nahéma Ricci in her debut leading role is astounding as Antigone, delivering a performance of incandescent conviction and empathy – this and the fact that the film is expertly conceived, photographed and directed will leave an indelible impression on anyone who sees it.

‘Philosophically compelling and emotionally devastating, Deraspe crafts a unique and contemporary cinematic experience that resonates deeply’ – Globe and Mail.

'Deraspe earns kudos for making a 2,500-year-old play feel vital, contemporary and cinematic’ - The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Antigone is a searing blend of real-world issues and classic themes that’s ambitious, riveting, and harrowing’ – Ready Steady Cut.

'Ricci is astonishing as Antigone. She has a way of demonstrating so much raw emotion in her gaze and when she looks directly into the camera in one scene, it is almost like she is peering into the soul of the viewer’ – In Their Own League.

'This is a stunning film of ethical and emotional ambiguities’ – AWFJ.org.
