Event Overview:
Join us for an insightful CME session, “Behind the Barbed Wire: Providing Medical Care for Pennsylvania’s Inmate Population.” This presentation explores the unique challenges and responsibilities of delivering healthcare within the state’s correctional facilities.
About the Presentation:
This session will be held in person and live-streamed, offering participants the opportunity to learn about how healthcare services are delivered to Pennsylvania’s incarcerated individuals — the only population in the U.S. with a constitutional right to healthcare.
With over 37,000 inmates across the state, clinical staff play a crucial role in meeting a wide range of medical, dental, and mental health needs. The presentation will address:
How the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections provides comprehensive medical care to inmates.
The unique social, behavioral, and health challenges common within this population, including substance abuse, trauma, and aggression.
Key differences between correctional and community healthcare settings, and how providers adapt to limited resources while maintaining quality care.
Target Audience:
This session is designed for physicians, mental health clinicians, social workers, therapists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals interested in understanding the complexities of correctional medicine. Anyone with an interest in learning more about healthcare delivery within the correctional system is welcome to attend.
This was an excellent presentation that offered insight into the health care process and health care issues faced by providers caring for the prison population. Requires effective teamwork among policymakers, administrators and providers.
Thank you
Informative presentation.
Location was odd. In the events center for only a handful of people. Otherwise great subject to learn about
Good venue, good food, good people, good presenter, equals great fun!
Well organized by Dr. Wincik!
Hope there is more of these!
Very interesting informative talk.
The doctor was very thorough. I am very familiar with prison health care but not specifically in PA. I thought her explanations were helpful to the general audience and also helpful to me in understanding the PA system. On a personal note, she seemed dedicated and interested in "doing the right thing". It is encouraging to see this type of dedication in the correctional setting. Please advise her that I admire her efforts.
Very informative and inspirational talk on being a physician in correctional facilities. Learned a lot from the speaker and appreciate the challenges that she faces in the careof prisoners.
