EQUINOX: A Ceremony of Sound & Creative Salon

March 21 marks the Spring Equinox. This is the moment when day and night are equal, and light begins to overtake darkness.

For much of human history, this turning point was considered the true beginning of the year: a natural reset aligned with the rhythms of the earth rather than the calendar.

EQUINOX is an intentional gathering that honors that threshold.

Hosted by artist Trueson Daugherty inside Tulsa’s iconic Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, the experience blends live music, architectural beauty, and spacious listening to mark the arrival of spring.

The morning begins with an creative salon - an open, relaxed space for conversation, connection and expression among artists, thinkers, and culturally curious members of the community.

The program features performances by Ramsey Thornton and Micaela Young, culminating in a special organ sound bath that invites deep listening and creative reset.

This is not a religious service. It is a moment to pause together to acknowledge renewal through art, sound, and shared presence.

EQUINOX is a collective “New Year’s Day” ceremony celebrating light, growth, and possibility.

Wonderful to spend a morning in a beautiful building with people expressing art. Well organized and laid out.

The organ sound bath and musical performances were A+. I also thought the food spread was impressive, though I wish I would have known the extent of the food offerings, or else I wouldn't have eaten a hearty breakfast beforehand (somewhere in the description "coffee" was mentioned but there was much more than just coffee). In general, I would have appreciated a little more information about the event. I would have appreciated an approximate schedule of events, more information about what the soapbox portion entailed, and the answer to questions like "do you have to/are you encouraged to stay all four hours?" In the event's marketing, a lot of emphasis was put on the sun reaching its zenith above the church's spire, but at the end of the event, there was no guidance for how to best see this visual element of the equinox.

As other reviewers mentioned, the soapbox was a little chaotic. I'm assuming it's gone more smoothly at Parlour events where perhaps there are fewer people. I feel like there should have been some level of moderation so that those who couldn't push to the front of the space had a chance to be heard.

But in general, I enjoyed the opportunity to see the inside of an exquisite building, discuss the definition of "artist," and hear from creative Tulsans. The highlight from me was hearing one soapbox speaker's spoken word piece about "saving the day"[light] in little jars.

Lovely experience for congregating without religious affiliation!
Would have appreciated a longer organ/soundbath though! I could sit and listen to the organ for at least an hour! Thank you again for hosting such a lovely Spring Equinox, the building was beautiful and very special in Design.

Beautiful gathering of artists, a lot of lovely, diverse voices shared captivating material. At times it seems like a certain kind of Tulsa person was more apt to be at the microphone than the other, even more diverse and less heard voices that were present.

The rules were clearly stated, and in my opinion, violated a few times by promotional content and not nipped quickly enough.

I do wonder how the space itself created space or permission for some and also created hesitance or feeling misplaced for others.

Ramsey and Micaela Young were the highlight and it feels like still a prelude and preparation for what followed. Talented and brilliant artists, and still, whether moved from personal feelings, the experience did serve as a vibratory experience to mine our emotional bodies and prime us for a communal service.

It was still a religious bait and switch, regardless of the very public protestations otherwise. The presence of the pastor at the pulpit, still invoked us collectively, without consent, in his "apology" as the body of Christ. My personal boundaries felt violated, regardless of the sincerity of the content, and I felt it was an inappropriate overreach.

Most disappointed by this. Especially because in the advertising it said "This is not a religious service. It is a moment to pause together to acknowledge renewal through art, sound, and shared presence."

Stellar!!! Thoughtful production, authentic expression, good times, very very fair price. Great people doing really cool things..... encouragement to do and be our ART before we are gone and unable to express it. Thanks Trueson.

The experience of Equinox at Boston Ave. Methodist church was so beautiful. Gathering with other creatives and like-minded people is always a joy. The acoustics of the great hall enhanced the normally intimate music by Micaela Young and Ramsey Thornton. This was a great pairing, and listening to them both at one event made me realize the similarities in their songwriting styles.
I really appreciated Rev. Sam Powers's "Lament" that he read prior to the organ sound bath; It made that church's openness clear to any who may have had any defensive feelings about sitting in a church sanctuary.
Evan's organ sound bath was a beautiful, meditative experience, and could've even gone on for 5 or 10 minutes more. It really showcased an amazing musical instrument and the acoustics of the sanctuary.

Too much down time. We arrived at 6:30 a.m. and participated in outside activities, waited and waited for the sun to rise to the top of the tower, chilly air and windy. We came in at 8:50 so missed the finale. Inside after checking in we were not sure what to do. Guides said we could explore where we discovered refreshments but no where to sit or comfortably stand to eat. We then found the location of the next events. We were able to sit on a bench very close to the soap box. I brought a painting to display and planned to speak about the expansion of creativity from inception to the pinnacle of understanding and beyond. Based on the triangle symbol, which was reflected in the surrounding architecture. When the time came I couldn’t compete with the people pushing forward to make it to speak. I was physically unable to crawl on the floor to be in the queue or to hop up and speak. The musicians were excellent but should the should have a microphone. The sound bath was amazing and planting seeds was a nice touch but the location was not ADA. I had to ask no less than five individuals to allow me access to the stair rail. Special thanks to the minister’s statement-I have such respect for him. The concept of the organizer was excellent.
