Description

Have a Halloween to remember!

On Halloween, we are bringing you an evening of incredible dance music in a carnivalesque atmosphere: Two Fantastic Bands, one talented DJ, circus performers, face painting, carnival vendors and more!

Ages 16 and up

Featuring the funky grooves of MarchFourth—a mighty, explosive, big bass band, and the exquisite musical stylings of Mitchum Yacoub & The Brass Empire!—fusing sensual African rhythms with driving Cumbian soul grooves to keep you dancing all night!

MarchFourth

MarchFourth is a joy-inducing force of entertainment. The colorful explosion of brassy funk, rock, and jazz is all about the groove. This larger-than-life group of musicians and acrobats tours the country year-round, bringing a spirit of celebration wherever they go. MarchFourth is, in a word, FUN!

Fifteen MarchFourth musicians traveled from Portland, Oregon to New Orleans, Louisiana to record their fourth studio album, MAGIC NUMBER, self-released in September 2016. With Producer Ben Ellman (Galactic) and Engineer/Producer Mikael “Count” Eldridge (DJ Shadow, Tycho, Trombone Shorty) at the helm, the album is full of the captivating grooves and brassy swagger you’d expect from MarchFourth, plus a healthy dose of New Orleans magic, with guest appearance by Trombone Shorty, Stanton Moore (drums), and Matt Perrine (sousaphone). The album was fan-funded through Kickstarter.

“From the first note to the last, the sound was pumping and the fun never stopped… It’s worth noting that there are serious musicians behind all the fun. It’s obvious these guys (and gals) have had lots of training and formal practice. Talented band geeks turned rebels.” ~USAToday

Mitchum Yacoub & The Brass Empire!

Inspired by the artists like Fela Kuti, Dr. Dre and James Brown, Mitchum Yacoub’s music harkens back to Africa in the 70s – with the bass and drums turned up a notch. He executes strong, repetitive grooves layered with Afro-Latin percussion and vibrant, tight horn lines that call all dancers to the floor.

Originality, musicianship and a massive sound are three elements keeping Yacoub’s band steadily on the road, and a fast-growing festival favorite. The highly acclaimed release of his debut album, “Living High in the Brass Empire,” brings the experience home as a showcase in his unique approach to roots music; forming explosive intersections of Afrobeat, cumbia and soul which will lift you from your seat and leave you wanting more.

Unfortunately my friend and I arrived in the middle of Mitchum Yakoub’s set. They were by far my favorite part of the event. Spectacular grooves, amazing musicians. I wish I had gotten to see their entire performance. Great to dance to! Super fun band. And pros!

The Circus show was a little weak and strange, consisting of gee whiz glow in the dark balls and other items. Would have been nice to just have the DJ keep the vibe up with some choice dancing tunes and scratch the circus.

March Fourth I have seen twice now and find their music to be interesting but not that danceable. Especially when compared to Mitchum Yakoub or any other truly Funktacular band. I know they have a big following here in Ashland - I’m not sure why. Perhaps it is their wacky outfits.

And lastly, it would have been nice to have a packed house. Seemed like the crowd was sorta small. Perhaps this show could have been promoted with more vigor.

Reading over this I feel kinda bad about my whining. I really liked the opening band, not that impressed with the headliner and the circus show needs some time in the wood shed. But, in the words of Jeff Lebowski, “That’s just like my opinion, man.”

Doors opened at 7:30 but the first band didn’t come on until 9, so that was misleading. Also $50 was too steep of a ticket price for small name bands. If I didn’t have those complaints, would have been 5 stars.

I'll start by saying that I've been to several events at the Armory including Halloween and NYE last year and have always had a great time but this year was different. The tickets were too expensive and I think that's why the place was almost empty when we first arrived even though we got there an hour and a half after it started. Then band's were good but the crowd was so small that there just wasn't much energy in the room. When the DJ started the music was so different and the vibe really changed for the worse. Then a ln ugly fight started in the women's bathroom and it took security a long time to notice, I actually had to tell them.
We escaped through a side entrance and went home.
