Two films, made almost 80 years apart, offer widely different perspectives on Dutch history and culture.
14-yr-old Shabu, an aspiring Dutch-Surinamese rapper, is not having a good time. Having crashed his grandma’s car he’s having to work all summer to pay her back. Tired of odd jobs, Shabu decides to stage a block party in Rotterdam’s notorious De Peperklip estate to showcase his talents and win his grandma over. Shabu will steal your heart in Shamira Raphaëla’s hilarious, upbeat, better-than-fiction documentary.
‘The overall effect is magical and euphoric, rather as if Jacques Demy had jazzed up La Haine’ - Ryan Gilbey, The Guardian.
‘A crowdpleasing evocation of the Dutch city during one sun-dappled summer’ - Neil Young, Screen International.
‘Vivid! Fun! Uplifting! Light!’ - Marina Ashioti, Little White Lies.
A 1941 night raid on Stuttgart goes wrong for the crew of a British Wellington bomber. They all bail out successfully over Nazi-occupied Holland, but are faced with capture. Initially suspicious, the local Dutch population agrees to help the crew – at enormous risk to themselves. For their fourth collaboration Powell and Pressburger were commissioned by the wartime Ministry of Information to make a propaganda film, but turned in a stylish masterpiece now regarded as one of the very best wartime British films. Googie Withers stars as a particularly glamorous Dutch Resistance leader.
‘Every sequence is visually arresting, made with so much care and attention’ - Rob Adam, Backseat Mafia.
‘What's striking... is its stark modernity, a lean story told with artful touches and unfussy performances…’ - Roger Moore, Movie Nation.
‘This is an exceedingly good flying-war film. Lovely photography, first-class direction, straightforward production and sincere acting from people who know their job put it at the top of its class’ - Monthly Film Bulletin, April 1942.
